Sonqua: southern San history and art after contact

This well-illustrated synthesis traces the impact of immigrant Khoekhoe, Nguni, Sotho and European groups on indigenous San communities in South Africa and Lesotho - from first contact, at least 1500 years ago, until the demise of the last hunter-gatherer-raider San groups and their rock art traditions, in the second half of the 19th century. The integration, both willing and forced, of southern San into the societies of the various colonising groups, continuing into the earlier years of the 20th century, is also detailed and discussed, as are the changes that occurred in the San rock painting tradition after contact.
