Problem Strings for Fluency and Beyond: Grade 4

Problem strings consist of carefully crafted sequences of related math problems that help students develop robust mathematical reasoning. More tightly crafted than number talks to rely on more than just talk, they are designed to ensure fluency and progressive mathematical development. This unit aligns with grade four objectives and is part of a new mathematics series on fluency that is a companion to k-5 Contexts for Learning Mathematics. This book provides problem strings to support estimation, rounding, comparison, and addition and subtraction within 10,000, and to develop computational fluency with multiplication of small and large amounts. It contains comparison, addition, and subtraction of fractions with the coin and clock models, and with the double number line. It also contains strings on generating patterns, representation and interpretation of data, measurement conversion, measurement of area, perimeter, and angles, and reasoning with shapes and their properties.
